Unplugged fun

After coming home from a long day at school, you decided to unwind in a comfy chair, bed, couch etc. After a minute or so a light appears and you begin to type, the sound of your fingers typing away fills the air. Soon you find that you not only have two tabs open but six or seven, you sit there enjoying your alone time reblogging, posting, tweeting, listening, updating, messaging, and socializing.
As the years have progressed the idea of fun and passing time has increasingly changed from hanging out with friends or playing outdoor activities and board games to more “cyber” related fun. With technology it has become easier to play your favorite board games on your electronic device, and although it may be more convenient and efficient you miss out on the real benefits of being away from technology.
According to a Scholastic article “board games can teach important social skills, such as communicating verbally, sharing, waiting, taking turns, and enjoying interaction with others.” Board games are also known to help teenagers and young children with competitive urges, not only do board games have benefits but so does playing outside or just hanging out with friends.
Here in Yuma there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy your afternoon instead of lounging around in front of the computer or T.V. For example we have activities for teenagers and adults to participate in, at the Yuma Main Library. The library holds book clubs, craft classes, quilting classes, writing classes and they also hold classes to learn new languages.
Not only does the library have activities for the community and you to enjoy but the city also has pottery classes and art classes that or held weekly in downtown Yuma. Not only are there creative activities you can enjoy but there are also outdoor activities you can also go to our local skate park if you enjoy skating, roller blading, bike riding or even scootering. Another place you can visit to “pass time” with a group of friends that not only is fun but very exciting is Jump Up. Jump Up is Yuma’s first family owned and operated indoor gymnasium, where teens go to jump on trampolines, climb ropes, attempt gymnastic tricks, and have a good time. Now if you are not a fan of Yuma’s scorching hot temperatures during the summer, you’re best bet is to go out to our local pool, Kennedy Pool or our local river.
So instead of sitting around texting, tweeting, blogging and watching T.V. Try to enjoy the day by getting a group of friends and play some board games or joining a community club or just visiting some local hangouts.
