When the word interesting is used, one name should come to mind: Ivan Robles. Robles is a junior at Kofa High School. He grew up in Yuma with a family of five brothers and one sister. He enjoys reading comic books, and loves to play video games. He appears as a pretty normal guy who enjoys guy things; however, he is far from your typical average guy.
Growing up as a brother, it has helped define Robles’ character. “It definitely taught me responsibility, having to take care of my brothers and sister”. Family has always been important to him. “My mom and dad just encouraged me to be the best I can be,” said Robles. Both of his parents have helped shape him into the person he is today, but his mom has especially taken a significant role in his life since, she “born and raised” him.
Robles is a very down to earth guy and just enjoys life. He loves attending Kofa everyday because he gets to hang out with his, “pretty awesome” friends; however, he also can’t wait to graduate next year. “I do plan on attending college. My choices are between the University of Arizona, Arizona State University, or Arizona Western College, and I want to work towards becoming either a pharmacist or a pharmacist’s’ assistant.” Even though he grew up in Yuma and has his friends are in Yuma, Robles said, “I think after college, I wouldn’t come back to live in Yuma, but I would come back to visit my family.” Robles has goals that he is aspiring to reach and has the motivation to do so, but he also has a side where he slows down and enjoys the little things. Well, the little things he obsesses over.
When asked if he had any weird obsessions, Robles appeared as a smart phone salesman stating, “Yes…Phones!” Why? “I don’t know. I just know everything there is to know about smart phones. You have access to any type of information right in the palm of your hand. It’s awesome!” He is so obsessed with phones and technology that when he was asked if he could own any type of business, what business would it be, he instantly replied, “Apple!” Phones are not the only thing he relishes, though. He also revels in the artwork and storylines of comic books.
It seems that reading comic books has become a very popular trend in today’s youth, so it is not a surprise when you meet someone who takes an interest in comic books or superheroes. Robles does not read comics just because he jumped on the bandwagon. He initially took an interest in comic books because his older brother happens to be a comic book artist.
Robles’ older brother has actually been an important influence in his life. Not only did he introduce him to comics, but his brother also recommended him for a job at Dairy Queen about one year ago and has been working there ever since. He very much enjoys his job at DQ but when asked if he ever had the chance to work at Starbucks instead, he said “Oh yeah, definitely”.
If Robles had one piece of advice to give students at Kofa he said it would be, “Try hard in school, the usual cheesy thing,” and if someone is having a bad day he said, “Listen to music, it’s what I do when I’m having a bad day. Especially Minus the Bear.” Robles is always being productive, whether it be work or school. He is, indeed, a hard-working student and potentially someone to idolize. If someone did not know him, before, they now have scratched the surface of this studious, mellow, junior.
